Seattle Animal Shelter Volunteer
I have always wanted to be a volunteer at the Seattle animal shelter but had my head caught in my buttocks. It seems to happen to the best of us, we put off something till the future. Not any more.
I had fun at the orientation meeting and got to meet the team leads for all the different services the shelter provides via it's volunteers. Another interesting thing that I noticed was that a majority of the new volunteers were women. I would have thought that the distribution of male to female would have been more even but alas it seems that the women of Seattle have more time for the animals than the men. I will leave speculation up to the reader. We also had to sign a volunteer agreement that stated we agreed to spend 8 hours a week working at the shelter for six months. They really want to make sure you are serious in your commitment.
I have my first shelter training Sunday morning and get my nifty identification badge then too. I also have to get my dog training at that time. I believe that I'm going to be spending most of my time handling cats but there is always a chance you might have to deal with a dog. The dogs take up a majority of the space at the Seattle shelter. I really can't wait to help out.
